Past Shows
Jim Gill, April 12, 2008
This was Jim's second performance at Huntington Woods House Concerts. Since his 2006 show, Jim wrote a number of new songs that demonstrated his versatility in terms of subject matter, musical style, and lyrics. Though the songs were mostly different than at his last show here, they were just as enjoyable. The newer songs "Cat's Cradle", "Dreaming Indigo", and "Whipping Boy" were particularly memorable for their heartfelt passion and poignant lyrics. On other songs, Jim displayed his humorous side and also kept us in stitches with his stories and anecdotes. The audience interacted with Jim throughout the concert and, once again, appreciated his quick wit! Jim's career as a singer, songwriter and guitar player has met with more and more sucess over the past several years, and it is easy to see why. As with Jim's last show here, members of the audience raved about how much they enjoyed it. For more about Jim and to order CD's, check out his website:
Peter Mulvey, October 21, 2007
It's difficult to categorize Peter Mulvey's music. Depending on the song, his music crosses over a number of musical genres, including jazz, rock/pop, and alternative folk. More importantly, this music is alway interesting, inventive, at times humorous, and at times serious. At this house concert, Peter performed songs from his last several CD's, including the extraordinary "Notes From Elsewhere" CD where he performs solo. Peter's songwriting is equally matched by his great voice and masterful guitar playing. Some audience members were very familiar with Peter's music, and the one's that weren't quickly became fans. Jim Gill, October 21, 2006
Jim Gill is a singer/songwriter/guitar player/storyteller extraordinaire! His stories about growing up with seven sisters in an Irish Catholic family were hilarious. His songs, based on life experiences, were sensitive, funny, and musically engaging. Jim played six- and twelve-string guitars as well as harmonica. Occasionally he used a looping device so that he could sing both lead and harmony parts. Almost all of the songs were originals, and all of them were outstanding. Jim has a rare talent for engaging the audience, and a house concert is the ideal venue for this. Numerous audience members expressed interest in seeing more of his performances, and asked to be notified when we have Jim back for another concert. We plan to do just that. David Grier, Noam Pikelny, and Shad Cobb, April 21, 2006
We had a sold-out concert of 50 people, some of whom were musicians themselves. Anyone lucky enough to be in the audience that night can attest that the music was incredible. David, Noam, and Shad were also nice guys and were kind enough to stay for awhile after the concert and talk with interested audience members.
Ben Burdick, June, 2005
At our first house concert, Ben thrilled the audience with his performances on acoustic guitar, fretless electric guitar, and even the didgeridoo. He improvised on jazz standards, popular music, and his own compositions. Ben's playing on the acoustic guitar was tasteful, inventive and always interesting. On the fretless guitar, we were treated to music unlike that which most of us had ever heard. Ben utilized a guitar synthesizer along with a Godin Fretless electric guitar to create sounds of other instruments such as trumpet and piano in addition to guitar. The way he was able to tastefully and seamlessly integrate these sounds took great skill and musical understanding. For more about Ben, see his website:
